In medieval times, the Hospice of St. Catherine received Western notables who were visiting Rhodes; today, restored, it shelters the Heritage Educational Centre of the Ministry of Culture in the Dodecanese Islands.
The ambition of the Archaeological Service is to inspire the coming generation, the citizens of the future, with an appreciation of their heritage within a building which will soon be the centre of a large and important archaeological site covering a wide period: the Hospice stands among monuments that are currently being restored, enhanced or brought back to light by the archaeologist's tools - such as the Hellenistic fortifications, the churches of the Virgin of the Burgh and the Virgin of Victory and the Jewish Synagogue.
We believe the the memories evoked by the building itself, but also by the surrounding monuments, albeit in their present rough state, will penetrate the tender consiousness of children; enhancing and reiforcing the message and content of the Heritage Programmes of the Centre. We feel the Heritage Educational Centre of Rhodes invests its hopes in the future; the seed planted now in the citizens of tomorrow will bear its fruit in a few decades..
